Did the tube burn through at the side, that is a possible cause of it dying down, or it may just need a choke to keep up the pressure. A good start. The addition of metals can raise the temperature. If you ever get on to Barium Nitrate and Aluminium mixes, some of those produce tremendous heat and need very thick walled tubes.

Keep up the good work. :)

The tube did start to burn after a few second but that's my own doing as I rolled them myself. I thought it was worth rolling my own tubes for the first few experiments until I get a feel for how it works and also the safety in making them.

A loose powder can propagate a flame completely through in milliseconds so any normal powder will go bang, a pressed powder will burn from the end (like a cigarette! (anyone remember those))

Well I gave it a second go tonight and managed to make 2 fountains with my home made tubes. Both contained approx 10 grams of BP+Al composition in an 8g+2g ratio.

I got some nice effect from them however now I think it is time to get some good sturdy tubes and invest in some better materials such as clay etc to progress this further. For my first two experiments with fountains I am happy with how they have gone, I guess it only gets more addictive from here!

Apologies for the video watermark on the video, the software I have is only a trial.

You could try making a glitter fountain, most glitter comps  use antimony trisulfide and are normally based on star comps.

Here's one from passfire with no antimony trisulfide however you would need to raid the kitchen or go to the supermarket to get some baking soda

Gold Glitter (no antimony trisulphide) - Troy Fish

KNO3 -  55

S - 17

Charcoal (airfloat) - 11

Baking Soda - 7

Aluminium (spherical 400 mesh) - 5

Dextrin - 5

I haven't tried it and its probably not the best glitter but may be worth a shot, you could prob just omit the dextrin.

cheap cat litter (bentonite type) works fine for clay

Well D1 is a nice glitter star and it uses bicarb and spherical aluminium, Find D1 star mix and press some into a tube try a minor choke.

Thanks for that I have found it as follows:

Component Percentage Ounces

Black powder meal 0.71

Sulfur 0.11

Aluminium Powder 0.07

Sodium Bicarbonate 0.07

Dextrin 0.04

I am planning on getting some proper tooling and 3/4" tubes from oliver brown at the end of the month so hopefully I'll get some better results with better gear.
