Wouldn't ignite with magnesium?? Surely you must have made a small mistake in the placement of the mag. powder; though perhaps, if the mesh in the aluminum is fairly low, you could add a weak oxidizer to make it hotter? I could be entirely wrong on this one...
And really guys, if you want to make explosions, make it properly, in very safe conditions, with powders that are meant to purposefully make explosions, in small amounts, especially when you have burning metals flying through the air!

It exploded with a massive report and through burning copper over 5 metres up in the air.

I shudder when I think what would happen if molten metal got on your skin, face, or anything you can feel. I consider when a rocket of mine blows up to be a complete failure.
Well, enough on the safety...Could I use larger particle size (lower mesh) aluminum or copper oxide to ensure the safety of my rockets, since a ton press is not available to me?
When one plays with fire, one is bound to get burndt.

Ive had molten lead splash up my nose before, It was not nice at all. Thermite is one thing we really shouldnt mess with, especially with 2000 degrees within easy reach. Be very careful with this stuff, it throws sparks a long way and sets fire to most combustables instantly. If it doesnt burn your skin it will burn you retina, easily. Sorry for the lecture but you might not get a second chance, it needs respect.

Marcus.

EDIT: Miniskinny, do you have a decent vice? if so it will produce a ton of pressure no problem.

The thermite was in the container above the thermite. What you see at the bottom is the Iron (if its Fe Thermite) when it hits the floor. It splashes everywhere, the sparks are bits of molten Iron

Mostly they are used for welding, railway tracks being common. And for anything that requires intense pinpointed heat. You can also get rid of 'things' with it.

IIRC, the military uses alot of the stuff for rendering vehicles unuseable.

A large enough amount of thermite placed on a car bonet will destroy an engine rather effectively.

I would assume the cable fixing device in the nostalgia thread uses some sort of thermite mixture.

There should be lots of other applications aswell.

I don't Know Who Deleted My Original Post Regarding this Thermite Reaction Fascination, and if it was too harsh, Oh Well, Everything I said was true. I have been around here about a year now and I have been pretty Cool About giving up many a hard learned lesson for free, advising, Safety Issues etc, and it really chaps my behind to have a post deleted, So I'll try this again, Nicely'

Thermite will hurt you, The Reaction is Not all that impressive and it only takes once to get burned.

If combining 2 chemicals and working your tail off to get it to light, is your thing, at least make it something someone else has'nt.....Like an Iron/TI/Aluminum Oxidizerless GlitterfunkenKickenheimer Star that you have to Figure out a prime for and make something that is for the FOCAL or Audible enjoyment of people who enjoy FIREWORKS, Thermite Has No Place Here, I've seen The Results of a good Burn, and it was not Pretty, and the Neat HOLE that is now there for life, which you can see through, in the dudes foot, is a great Party Gag. A Bit Costlier than a 20 Cent pack of Crackers, Since After Surgeries and therapy and all the lost enjoyment in his life, 2 years of total recovery time and the total cost for about $1.20 worth of chems cost him over $30,000 in medical expenses.

There, Hope I did'nt step on anyones little toes, but if I did, GOOD, I'm not too late, you still have them.....

Stay Green, Leave this Military Concoction alone and make something Really Neat.......

Thank you, and I appreciate the Mods Who DO AN EXCELLENT JOB, My first post was Long and Harsh, So it probably was best deleted, I still Stand By What I said In The Harsh Version and The Nice Version. Richard, G, Mark, all of you are tirelessly maintaining a very time consuming and difficult to accomplish Task, and I commend you all. Trying to Decide if Posts are over the top is tough.

No Offense Taken and all is well. I will continue to contribute what I can, though I may be sometimes a Bit Brash and oppinionated, I Have plenty of pyrotechnical safety ( a true oxymoron if there ever was one) experience to back that up. Consider this Picture.....

My 2004 Punkinbuster, 1Lb Mag-55 Modified Salute.........

Or

Settin up the Tens and Twelves for Octobers Shoot,

What some May Consider Safe, Others May Not, The Salute in the first Picture Weighs 1 lb 13oz's, the Case weighs 13OZ's spot on, so there's 1 Lb of Sure enuf Kill Me and The Truck Right there, However, All Applicable and Long Learned Lessons Were Followed and Went Well, and This was Taken in October so.....It's november and Me Still Be Here Rappin your Ear right...... What you Dont See is The Ground Strap that Keeps Me, The Truck and The Punkin and Salute all Nice and Cozy at the same electrical Potential, No Static, No Bang. Little Things Mean Alot In this Trade, Learn, Don't Burn.......

Off My Binsford 3000 Soapbox Now, Thank you again Richard, and to the Younger not so experienced guys out there, there are 7 Chemicals in My Salute Up There. In thermite there are only two. Is the Safety Factor Exponential? Debatable, They Can Both Kill, only I had 7 More Chances to Make a Mistake while I built it.........and only cats have a supposed 9 lives. So In my opinion, the logical consequence of getting hurt is actually easier with 2 Chemicals Than 7, What Say Yee???????

Very Best Regards,

Stay Green,
