By the way, each reel costs about 100 quid, so a case will cost you around ?1000

Given that admins are omniscient and omnipotent super-beings, then no, indeed we do know absolutely everything :-)

If you're serious about experimenting with underwater launching of shells or floating displays on the surface (my local village display fires things onto the lake where they go off a few minutes later)then try experimenting with electrical ignition using resistance wire (from Maplins) to make little heating elements..Oh..and use BATTERIES as your power source...Mains electricity and water don't mix !!!!

Please dont confuse PIC with flash cord. PIC is Plastic Ignitor cord, flash cord is a specialist theatrical effect, like flash cotton etc. Also, buying directly from the Nobel / ICI website...hmm, do you think they would sell even a reel to just anybody???

PIC on a case works out about ?65 / roll 150m (Slow) from Nobel.
Essex Pyrotechnics have a Brazilian version called "Mantitor" slightly slower and a little cheaper, rolls of 100m, also waterproof (I've ordered a test roll and will let you know.)

NB They consider igniter cord to be cat.4, so you'll probably not get far unles you have the appropriate insurance and storage licenses. B)

What is inside PIC (Plastic Igniter Cord)?

The insides are a brown colour with a copperwire core. The flame is a amazingly bright blue / white flame.

Heres two frame grabs of Slow PIC burning, notice the blue and white flame.

And heres three frame grabs from Fast Pic burning. Notice the more intense flame and it turning into a more 'flame-like' flame at the end.

I always thought it was a black powder core. But I suppose it could be a number of things.

Based around Red Lead, Potassium Nitrate, Nitrocellulose, Silicon, Potassium Perchlorate, and Blackpowder according to the PSDS I have for it.

I suspect the standard yellow cord is based around perc / nitrate rather than blackpowder.

Lovely stuff, my favourite fuse full stop. We use it in displays all the time. Totally waterproof, easy to get going, and once it's lit there is no stopping it!

Karl, that looks like shock tube, used in place of det cord in blasting. Does it look like the tube is "dusted" inside with powder, and a wire running through the length of it ? If so, it's a mix of HMX and aluminum powder. I think for pyro use there are "shock to flame" adapters and vice versa, that the large display companies use.
If it's initiated by a cap, it has an awesome velocity of detonation.
