as the title may suggest to those of you who know the outcome, have i actually made any NaClO3 what so ever, or just a dangerous or toxic solution that one should probably dispose of with some haste.

things to consider:

1000ml fully saturated with pure ( no anti caking agent ) salt

cell operated at room temp for 30 hours @ 20vDC / 3A

Cheers

Are two of the best online sources of info about perc and chlorate production. Please read all of the posts and follow lots of the links carefully, so that you are aware of the current state of amateur electrolysis research. Particularly posts by Dann2 and Swede are highly recommended as these people have made and run big cells for long periods.

Sadly the cell you describe is likely to have made a toxic mess! Some Chlor Oxides and some dissolved copper and zinc. It's also more useful and power efficient to run a cell at about 4.5 volts and 5 to 100 amps would not be a bad current for bulk production.

In the UK Perc is cheaper than chlorate from several suppliers, and both are cheaper than making it yourself! In other countries this may be different.

The link to the current edition of those electrolysis pages is to be found in a post by Dann2 somewhere in the Sci Mad.... forum linked thread. they were originally hosted on geocities which was pulled by it's owner.
