just came across this on you tube
maybe the "new" Foti e-matches use a similar composition,(a nano thermite)

an MIC - metastable interstitial composite, using nano materials
in the attached vid nano aluminium and nano molybdenum trioxide

Noting that the Chinese still sell red lead based crackle I doubt that they will sell us lead free igniters unless they are much cheaper.

I have however heard of lead free percussion caps coming into the US shooting range industry because of apparently significant aerosol lead for breathing by shooters and in particular the staff who are obviously there full time. As ever price vs perceived benefit will govern commercial uptake.

The primary constituent of many lead free primers is DDNP (Diazodinitrophenol); also known as dinol, diazol, or 4, 6-dinitrobenzene-2-diazo-1 -oxide to the chemist. The German chemist Peter Griess is credited with the development of DDNP in 1874. http://www.sciencema...d.php?tid=15290

whilst that may be true for primers (impact initiated)

I don't believe that it applies to e-matches, which tend to be pyrotechnic compositions

i.e. boron/bismuth trioxide as one example

I was commissioned to research other Squib (http://en.wikipedia....quib_(explosive) formulations.

While Electric Matches (E-match) are either pyrotechnic compositions or thermite in formulation, other compositions were formulated and tested.

One formulation was smokeless gunpowder (nitrocellulose), http://en.wikipedia....mokeless_powder and Diazodinitrophenol (DDNP) dissolved together in a minimal amount of acetone solvent to get a thick syrup consistency that could be moulded with a wire. When dried from the acetone solvent, it retained its moulded shape, and was waterproof.

hi,

the first paper mentioned re the feasibility study if nano scale thermites is a good paper, well worth a read

some of the others like the one using iodine pentoxide is a bit obscure

thanks for the references,

loads more in the patent literature
