Just thought I would share my latest homemade tool :).

Where I work, we got a 3D printer. If you have used one of these things, you will know how useful they can be. You can design things from scratch to your exact spec.

Anyway, I am no 3D printer design guru, but I thought - tube support for pressing rockets! Even though it prints in plastic, they are incredibly strong.

After fiddling with Autodesk 123Design I exported my design and set it away printing.

I am really chuffed with how it has turned out. See for yourself below.

Love it though I myself still question the strength of parts 3dprinted :-/

Now we can start churning out crossers tooling :-)

For something like this, the plastic is easily strong enough. I can jump up and down on this and it is OK (I weigh 15 stone :ph34r:).

However, I wouldn't like to print out some rammers and hammer them :unsure:

Crossette tooling - there's an idea!

I've seen pictures of a complete star plate made this way, how durable it proves...

I think Rip Rap could have just hit on a commercial product, I think the software could do with a tweak but I must say that is some good forward thinking well done Rip Rap.

Thanks. As for tweaking - that's the beauty of desgning it yourself - you can adapt / improve it and tweak it very easily.

I already have a plan to extend the whole support slightly and make a funnel insert so that I can press through it and easily add composition increments without using a "normal" funnel.

Did you make that star press Kenneth?

forgetting about the cost of the printer, how much does the plastic normally cost for a small project like this. maybe we could have a new section for 3d printing, cnc, plans and files.

The plastic filament itself isn't very expensive at all. There are different makes and types. For the tube support I made, I would guess the amount of filament I used probably cost a pound or less?

The cost (in time at any rate) is in the design and then the printing. Even this small project still took about 4 hours to print. This can be varied to some degree by altering the amount of in-fill and the accuracy and thickness of the layers it uses.
