I've seen different wire diameters for the same Mesh.

Example - 325 mesh

Wire Diameter - .0011"
Opening Size - .0017"
Open Area - 30%

Wire Diameter - .0014"
Opening Size - .002"
Open Area - 42%

That is from http://www.mcmaster.com/ under their 325 mesh.

It seems all the mesh sizes on their site has different wire/opening options.

So, there seems to be no standard. I guess wire diameter would depend on what use you want it for and the metal used.

The (-) would mean the mesh size of the particle will go through that specific mesh. Meaning, -200, the particles will pass through a 200 mesh screen.

I did do a search, and i did read that thread, but it didnt really answer my question. It did explain mesh sizes quite well, but it didnt give any examples of mesh size, so i still dont have a reference point. Thats why i asked the approx. mesh size of sugar, salt and flour, so that i can have a rough idea of what people are describing. So, can anyone answer this question? :D

I have bought several high quality sieves from Ebay. They were so cheap that I decided to buy the whole stock so that I could supply them to fellow pyrotechnicians who are looking for a good quality sieve.

They look very similar to this one:

I still have some 200 mesh sieves available. If you are interested send me a PM or email. Since I got them very cheap I will only ask for there actual cost to me. (about ten pounds each)+posting from Holland (where I live)

Now regarding your question, i found this interesting link:

Mesh vs Micrometers vs Things we can relate to ;-)

Click in the menu on ''appendix'' and then ''conversions'' and you will find a lot of useful information.

Patrick - there is a standard. The standard is in RANGE - meaning you are allowed a certain offset from the exact size. This means that 325 can be both .0017 and .002
