Sure thing Richard - it's not a fact but it does sound OK to substitute citric for boric acid.

Will check out the pH of both.....

Shimizu run tests on few acids to check their effects on decomposition of aluminium in nitrate formulas. From Citric, Acetic and Boric acid, only the Boric acid prevented the reaction from appearing. Unfortunately, I only have a summary of the conclusion rather then the research itself, which means I don?t know the reason for that.

The other acids slowed or prolonged the decomposition, but did not prevent it.

Is this a hard to find thing in the UK? We use it to run off cockroaches in Florida. It's real cheap. Citric acid must be more costly as well as harder to find.

Boric acid B(OH)3 is an incredibly weak acid, its pK value and hence its pH is about 9.25, it doesn't act as a classical bronstead acid as it will not donate H+ ions rather it acts as an acceptor for OH- ions and hence makes a good buffer when you want to ensure that your conditions are almost exactly pH 7. I can't find the data to work out the pH of citric acid but the fact is a tri-carboxylic acid means it will proably be a much stronger acid then boric acid and neutilisation will take place via H+ reactions.

Cripes, I'll send you some if they won't send me to jail. If Harry can mail it to you, I expect I could. It's cockroach powder for crying out loud. I have in front of me a bottle of 100% pure boric acid I purchased from the hardware store 4 - 5 yrs ago. Comes in 454g putup. Cost was $2.88. Let me know what you find out. NO JAIL TIME PLEASE. I DO NOT WANT A JAIL BUDDY!

You can kill cockroaches with it or buffer alum. mixes. :o

I was wondering if i could make some barium nitrate by adding pure barium to Nitric acid?It seems to be a possible reaction.Actually i have some barium and i dont have what to do with it.

You make Barium Nitrate From Barium Carbonate (Common in any pottary shop) and Nitric Acid (Not that common).

Again, I would highly advise against ?cooking? such materials for you first reaction. Nitric Acid will burn through everything ? including your skin, quiet happily. Barium Nitrate Is poisonous upon ingestion or inhalation (There is a very good post of barium poisoning elsewhere on the forum), and very little is required to make you drop dead ? and the fumes from this reaction can bore a hole through your lunges as well.

How about starting with Sodium Oxalate? You get that from Sodium Carbonate and Oxalic Acid. Much safer to start with.

boric acid can also be found at some potterysupliers, if they don't display it on their website send them a email they will probably be able to order it.

I know that these chemicals are dangerous. But i have some barium and i wanted to make something with it.Something simple.Thats why i wanted to make barium nitrate. Not to use it for pyro because i am amateur and i told you that i will first make a ballmill.Fortunately my dad had something like a ballmill for jewels and i may use this.It has a very strong motor.
