As for running like heck? In time like that I take the lazy way and use my ATV, I leave it in 1st or second gear, light the fuse and hop back onto the quad and gun the throttle. I only do that for bigger items.
God, how desperate to get away and bone-idle are you? Just use a longer fuse! Don't get too accustomed to taking the 'easy' way incase your ATV (aka 'Quad bike'?) should break or stall!

Never liked Tapers, the smoldering ends flick off every now and again on hard to light fuses.

I use good old matches, cheap and cheerfull and do the trick, I mean come on, 6 packs for 50p!
Don't get me started on matches. I just came back from a lil camping trip, the second morning I woke up, got out a pack of matches to light the gas stove and..
Soggyness. Ewww.... Had to go down to the local ?1 shop to get myself an 8 pack of lighters.
(And yes, I have heard of waterproof matches, but they cost the earth round here. I'd have to go with a portfire now.)

strike anywhere matches will dryt when rolled in your hair, the static drys them.
to waterproof matches, dip heads in candle wax.

If Bonfire night is a wet 'un we will see how well Portfires can really handle bad weather!

Wouldn't static ignite the match?

When you need to use them scrape the wax off or keep striking them!
