 How many Cat2 and Cat3 rockets use aerial shells as their payloads? Performance can vary greatly between rockets which are merely stuffed full of stars and those which use an aerial shell for their payloads;I have let off dozens of ballhead and Whoppa design rockets and have greatly found differences between those which are merely stuffed with stars and those which use an aerial shell and have found those loaded with aerial shells often perform somewhat better than those merely stuffed to the brim with stars, what does anybody else think?

I doubt any cat2 rockets would have any paper or plastic ball shell as a payload, quite a few cat 3 rockets seem to use a ball shell inside a fancy bright sparky canister. As most of us know using a ball design will allow spherical bursts and even patterns to be produced. One pattern rocket i recall is a heart shape one! This design of sticking 2.5 - 3 inch shells without time fuses is a way for the public to get pro looking bursts without needing cat 4 aerial shells which are now not avaliable to the general public. Unless you can build them yourself of course :D :D :D

Lunig do a range of large ball head rockets with some really superb effects including a blue strobe. I've seen a few other rockets with a 3" spherical header, but can't remember the brand. Sadly, quite a few of the large, shiny headed rockets are half full of air and don't generally perform as well.

Millennium do a 3 inch and a 2.5 inch ball head rocket, Lunig do produce wonderful rockets. I have seen videos on the freakpyromaniacs website and the amount of effects and stars they hold is very impresive

On the topic of ball head rockets (Shells on sticks), Millenium pyrotechnics produce such rockets as part of their "platinum professional range" (These are all cat 3 material) in a variety of sizes / effects ranging from 2.5" through to 3" and i believe that they have now brought out a couple of effects in a 4" version.

With regards to cat 2 (garden) versions of these rockets, there are quite a few varieties out there.
One such variety that i have used in the past and would strongly reccomend is the "apollo" rocket pack manufactured by Fireworks International.
Who said there wasnt fireworks between us?
