Interesting, Nice find there Mark!
In the Riverfest - Cincinnati, Ohio clip there is an effect i have not seen before. Above the mines there are shells bursting that give the effect of mines, all discharging their contents in a vertical fashion. Can anyone enlighten me on how this effect is achieved?
Are the shells fitted with a rope tail to keep them orientated in a particular way and fitted with an end disk designed to pop off?
Or am i barking up the wrong tree?

It's simpler than that James! All you need to do is break the shell weakly, and most importantly on the way up. The idea is the shell is travelling up, it still has momentum, and gently breaking it at this point imparts this momentum to the stars and other contents, which will still continue to travel upwards to produce the sky mine effect.

Shorter fuse, weaker shell!! Might throw together a little 3inch can shell like that, something like silver spreader stars should do the trick. Will fire it witht he rest of my test stash. What is the commercial name given to this tybe of shell, you see a dark sort of effect on multi-break shells. Regimental look at the shugborough Orzella video, you can see it happen on the first breaks of some.

Cheers Richard, will look into that. Its good to know it can be made from a cylindrical shell. I just love a good challenge, i might build one for the weekend come to think of it. Will post the firing of it in cylindrical shells

Is reducing the number of vertical spiking from 12, for a standard 3" can shell, to 6 or 8 enough to achieve the "skymine" effect. I should also imagine that cotton twine would be better than flax in this instance?

The break must be very soft looking at videos, i will try my standard 10hr ballmilled bp on crispies as a burst with a 15mm tiger tail stars. I will time the shell with a 1.5 second delay and put 25g lift under it. Will be fired next week i hope. May throw some stars in with the lift as i tried this before and it looks fantastic.
