Gentlemen,

http://www.art-ichiy...cess/index.html

Perhaps the best video footage I have seen of Japanese shells being manufactured, with almost the entire process documented from weighing, screening, star rolling, drying, shell assembly, and finally firing!

The last link on the page is one large clip of the lot. For any dial-up peasants amongst us, you can download each segment seperately.

It's called ''toro'' or ''torro'' if I'm not mistaking, it's basically star composition with a rice starch binder and water.
The japanese use it to wet the stars in the roller instead of the more common method of misting the stars with a spraybottle.
It's however tricky, the torro must be the exact right viscosity for it to work well.

See shimizu f.a.s.t. for a more detailed description.

Barry Bush's comprehensive chapter in Hardt also covers this technique in some detail.

what puzzled me was, that the lady who loaded the hemispheres just dumped a bunch of stars into the hemi and put the burst right on top without aligning the stars inside the hemi.
i wonder if those shells still have a nice, symmetrical break.
