Hi
Recently i went to see a performance of jerry springer the opera, i found it hilarious but could see why some christians may be offended. I was just wondering what everybody thinks performances of this nature and if you think that we should or should not be allowed such freedom of speach.

Freedom of speech cuts both ways.
If you have freedom of speech you have the right to say anything, and everybody else has the right to complain about it.

By sheer chance, I was caught up in the protests about the "Bhezati" play at Birmingham reperatory during Christmas 2004. Not a pleasant experience. Eventually the theatre pulled the play after much civil unrest from the sikh community.
Immediately there was an outcry with much wailing and knashing of teeth, and cries of "freedom of speech" [which incidentally a UK subject does *not* have as a legal right - surprised?].
What most people did not realise was that the theatre was exercising its freedom of speech in *not* putting the play on. It had the power of speech and chose NOT to use it.
What we *do* enjoy in this country is a high degree of tolerance and adaptability. There is the odd spat between various sections of society, but nothing like the full on hatred and violence endured in other countries. This ability to live peacably and amicably, despite disagreements, is the mark of a true UK subject.
