Hi

Could someone recommend a good ball mill website? It needs to be in the UK. I am only after a small ball mill and want to spend less than ?60 preferably (inc. delivery). Does anyone have any suggestions.

Thanks

There is lots of information on the forum if you use the search facility. Even a whole 27 page topic!

PLEASE SEARCH... otherwise you must be lazy! ;)

It is here:

I read that entire thread. Most of the thread went off on a tangent about building your own ball mill, and the links there that were useful either no longer exist, the places no longer ship to the UK, or they only sell large ball mills that cost silly money...

Actually I may not have read it all, I read the first 15 pages or so then gave up, it might help to read the end of the thread where the info's more up to date

While rock tumblers are not incredibly efficient as ball mills, for ?60, I don't think you'll be able to find anything better. Unless you want to build one, which could cost even less. 'Proper' ball mills (ones used in labs with variable speed, safety covers, etc) will cost much more than what you're prepared to spend (or at least the ones I've come across)

Have a look at this link to see what I mean. The Pascal one here isn't even particularly big.

Yes, I see what you mean!

The only useful link I gleaned from that 27 page thread was a link to Manchester Minerals. They do some rock tumblers that look quite impressive. But the cheapest one that looks like it might do the job comes to over ?80 with barrel and postage. The one that would definitely do the job is over ?100.

It's a bit dear for something that just spins a barrel at the end of the day, but I'm not even going to try building my own!

Don't suppose anyone could have a look at http://www.mancheste...tml could they?

I am thinking of buying the TUMBLER 900gm BEACH +BARREL Ref: 10-006 for ?49.95

Will that be okay for making small batches of BP (at a later date) and mixing my sugar/potassium nitrate mixture in to a really fine powder?

I know I need to buy the non-sparking lead media separately, does anyone know where I can get these lead balls from to put in the rock tumbler (assuming that the rock tumbler is suitable)?

Thanks

Pendulum,
I have the 900g. tumbler from manchester minerals. On the whole its good if you don't mind having to mill in small batches {50g. at a time, excluding media}, which wouldn't be a problem for you, depending upon your definition of 'small'!

With regards to lead media, I got mine from a fishing shop...

Regards,

Mike

Try muzzleloading suppliers for lead bullets. I think around .45Cal are best suited to milling small batches. Try to get Antimony-hardened ones, or they will not last very long, and the powder tends to stick to them easier.

I'm getting the [BEACH 6.75Kg TUMBLER Ref: 10-021] in a few days, waiting for the rubber barrels to come in. It rotates at about 50rpm and can mill a nice amount of chems at a time, all in all it will cost ?300, I've already bought some nice ceramic media. Any suggestions for these "tumblers", can the rpm to raised, also would it be better to get the vained barrels for polishing metal or the normal rubber unvained ones?

Cheers,
Drew

well if anyone is in the UK and is thinkin of ordering a mill/tumbler from the USA then think otherwise! hey have plenty of good ones, but the price of shipping is bad, plus getting the mill to workon british voltage and frequency is a pain up the ass. My mill's motor actually caught fire when i used it with a transformer in the UK. Caused a power surge that turned the whole house off!

holy cow - this is what gives me nightmares when milling BP...

it's a good point though - 110V 50Hz != 110v 60Hz... the inductance of the motor limits the current in inverse proportion to frequency, so 50Hz gives you 20% more current and possibly 44% more power, at the same time slowing the cooling fan by 20%... I would suggest running the mill at 90v max. at 50Hz.

Yeah that was pretty bad... but, the upside is that now i have a perfect casing for a new motor. the hard part is trying to find that motor which'll fit properly. Think i might just buy the "CR2" from manchester minerals-unless that is if someone has a suggestion for a cheaper one?-but of the same model? -_-
