It seem hobbychem are selling a list I poison. I sent an email asking him how he is manging to do this legally. If he replies it should make for some educating reading.

I ordered from them once a while ago but yes, it seems what they are doing is illegal. Dont know if the fuse is sent by royal mail, I would much prefer to order from Inoxia as I know its all done above board. Ordering from a site that is possibly cutting corners is a bad idea.

Cooperman: You right, this is all over the forum! Please search, im not going to close it as I want to see what reply Steve gets from Hobbychem!

It is, however, a very useful list 1 poison and fairly essential for at least one purpose... I did send them an e-mail a while back asking them to improve the safety labelling of it - I am sure this has improved since...

Thanks for your question.

Although barium nitrate is classed a poison, the grade we are now selling, whilst being suitable for pyrotechnic use, is not as toxic as you may think. according to our supplier, the lethal dose is only slightly greater than that of pure potassium nitrate.

The MSDS that come with this has been independently checked, and we have been informed that it is suitable for sale to the public.

The grade currently listed on our website is no longer for sale, a new look website is about to be launched in the next few days with the new grades listed.

Before it goes on sale again, I will re-confirm the status of this product with our suppliers to make sure it is still safe to sell.

Perhaps you could tell me more about this grade, I find it very hard to comprehend how you could have low toxicity Barium Nitrate in any purity over 5%. If you check a review of the legislation for poisons here you will see that only Barium carbonate and silicofluoride make list II, allowing for sale by a pharmacist or company registered with the local authority. All other barium compounds are list I and not for sale to the public. Perhaps your supplier was reffering to wholesale goods, which do not come into the poisons act.

LD50 for Barium Nitrate is 355 mg/kg
LD50 for Potassium Nitrate is 3750 mg/kg
Do you think it is possible that you have your units confused, or you missed a decimal point.

Wow, this guy is quick to reply to emal, (reply below). It seems he may have been a little naive with regards to the poisons act, but definatly happy to look into it before restocking. Unlike our friends who are going on a holiday to America courtesy of the US government.

i will look into this and confirm with our suppliers the exact grade that we are being supplied. if the barium nitrate we receive is of the correct grade, we will re-stock it.

however, if there has been some confusion, we will take the appropriate action withdraw it from sale.

I dont think he should be selling Barium nitrate, I bet a few people wont even use basic PPE against its nasty properties. Also his/her none use of correct English makes me wonder how old they are. This makes me so nervous, seems they want to supply the hard to find chemicals to kids that are unable to source the various grades and chemicals they desire to make a quick few quid! I'm sure they will be found and dealt with if this is not stopped. I bet the Barium nitrate is sent in dodgy packages and none marked as to what it contains! This has gone slightly off-topic and I may move a few posts if no body minds.

I have ordered some barium/strontium nitrate from hobbychem and it was well packed in heat sealed thick plastic bags. Both packets were labled with the correct information and hazard warnings, so I was quite happy.

A couple of years ago when I first started getting chems from them, they were in tied plastic bags with crap lables, so they have certainly improved on their packaging/labeling. Also, I recently told a friend about them and his first order had to be 'age verified' before it was sent. If i remember, my last order from inoxia had to be age verified as well, so this can only be a good thing if chem suppliers doing this.

List II poisons should not be sent in plastic bags, it is plainly illegal. They must be in child proof containers, it is as clear as that.
I do not know the requirements for List I poisons, but you can guarantee they will be more stringent.

TBH, the only place I have brought chemicals from that were packed in plastic tubs was a long time ago from KNO3.com but these were not child proof.

I must concur, I've bought all of these and more and they've only come in plastic bags, granted that none of what Inoxia sells are schedule 1 poisons but none the less...

I have bought off hobbychem a good few times,all the chems are clearly packaged etc,if you ever have any querys they are quick to reply ,so as to label them illegal/dodgy suppliers seems a bit over the top,maybe this is just a over sight on there behalf which they will address,

Having never ordered any chemicals (only ball mill equipment) from inoxia i cant comment on how they are packaged but do know that they use a courier,so they must use the same courier to deliver there chemicals,and so must complie to the requirements of transporting hazards materials.I will say though that i think that inoxia is a good/legit source for pyro supplies.

Hobbychem do use royal mail to deliver there goods (i was surprised,i was expecting a courier) and the packaging did list hazards.I aswell dont like the fact though that they are selling barium nitrate freely for anyone to buy
It would be nice to see age verification like inoxia(plus a courier),i would feel more comfatable ordering from them.
