A teacher at our school recently complained about guy fawkes night because she though it was bad to burn an effigy of someone who died 400 years ago and of course, her dogs don't like it

What really alarms me is the amount of people who sign petitions to ban the public sale of fireworks, because of the "stress & anxiety" caused to their dogs by loud "bangs". Now don't get me wrong - I love dogs (my parents have 3) but alot of these people can see no further than the end of a dog lead - anyone watch "Tonight" with Trevor Mcdonald on ITV 23/03/07 about dangerous dogs? This programme stated that since the introduction of the dangerous dogs act in 1991, 40,000 (yes 40K!!!) people have been injured, seriously injured or killed by dogs in the UK! Now if that was 40,000 people injured by fireworks - well, you can guess exactly what would happen!

Wow, that is over 3000 per year :o , a very useful point to use when dealing with that very argument.
Well spotted, this is just the sort of useful statistic to put forward in defence of our hobby.

Goodness, I had no idea the 'anti' campaign had such as strong presence :o

Maybe a form of words for our first petition could be something like this:

'Promote the continued availability of fireworks to the adult public, supporting the great British tradition of fireworks manufacture and display, educating users and enforcing existing legislation to reduce misuse, enjoying this timeless source of pleasure and delight'.

Just a starting point for suggestions...

You have to be a bit carefull as adding another petiton on a particular subject may just dilute the results (mind you they will reject petitions that are too similar to existing ones) Maybe better off supporting the existing petitions that are relivant.
If it looks like it's coming towards you, it probably is!
