hi im having a little trouble getting iron 3 oxide (fe2o3), ive tried bleach and vinegar but its messy and stinks
is it possible to burn steel wool? if not does anyone know any good and quick ways of obtaining this without buying it? thanks.

Why would you want to make it when you can buy it so cheaply, and its only rust anyway... leave some thin nails or iron powder in water for a couple of weeks unenclosed , and dry, then crush the remains to a powder. What was it needed for anyway?
You can never have a long enough fuse...

Well you might get red iron oxide by leaving some rust in an oven for a couple of hours. Never tried it, but if you do, please tell me wether it works or not. :)

I thought rust was red iron oxide anyway? Rust is always orange/red in colour... Not all that sure how they make black iron oxide though.

There's a lot of other stuff in the rust caused by water, for example iron hydroxide. But I agree that I would definetely invest in commercial Fe2O3, it's both cheap, clean of impurities and you don't have to prepare anything. But if you like making stuff yourself because the fun of it, I understand you very well.

Get it for under 2euros a kilo everywhere :) Thermite is not strictly pyrotechnics anyway :)
