I'm intrigued by this 'Thermobaric Grenade' at the bottom of this page:

http://www.elements-...ts/consumer.htm

The name seems to suggest it's some sort of FAE type device, but that sounds incredibly complicated for a training/reenactment grenade... is this marketing hype? I'm also not quite sure how this kind of device would create such a loud concussion, "with shock waves being felt a large distance away" instead of just a very very bright flash.

Does anyone have any info on these?

Sounds to me like an over-fueled metal/oxidizer system. These generally create a bright flash, a shock wave and a very deep bang.

For example the M46 photoflash mixture. I guess it is alot of marketing as the term 'Thermobaric Grenade' generally stands for killing people not with fragments but to harm bodys etc. by shock waves and heat.

I guess it just sounds cooler to sell it under such a name!

Im not sure on the technical side of things but i went to a display a couple of years ago and at the end they had a similar device, not really much of a bang but like a slow moving concussive shockwave,it was quite something

I saw a similar think in a 5th november display at school. I thinnk it was fired professionally, and there wer about 3 ground salutes, of which you could see and feel the shockwave. Absolutely fantastic. (thinking back the saftey distance was too short. The crowd nearly got hit by some stars from a mine which fell over or misfired)

There is a video on the home page, doesn't look like it does a great deal.
Demo is around 1min40 into the video.
We use their products on our paintball site, but not that particular grenade.
Most of the grenades are a bit cack apart from the smokes which are awesome.

Cool - thanks guys. I don't think I'll be buying any of these afterall!

While we're on the subject.... does anyone know of a source for these grenades?:

I used a few of these a couple of years ago and haven't been able to find any since. I think they're of German origin, definitely using metal-glazed BP, they're big, blue, and have a large spollette-type fuse initiated by friction igniter. And they're incredibly loud ; P

I'd be extremely grateful if anyone can provide any info on these.
