Is it a suitable prescription?

The prescription of fountain fireworks:

Potasium nitrate 10KG

Sulfur 1.5KG

Carbon 3KG

Iron Powder 10KG

Iron powder seems a little high.

You also have to consider the way in which you actually make the composition.
Mix, grind, mill.....

Also, your units look a little off :lol:

Try taking the Kilo prefix out and you won't be breaking the law!

You might get a better effect by using Iron filings, not powder. At least it looks better in my experience.

I agree, Iron Filings give really nice branching sparks.


I'd take a third of the KNO3, S, Charcoal and mill it into meal (BP), adjusting to the correct proportions.

Then Add in the rest in a coarse-ish form:
KNO3 - granular, as it comes out of the bag
Sulphur - Powdered
Charcoal - half airfloat, the other half of different grades from about 20# down to 120#, typically "20# to dust" is fine.
then mix it all up, add the iron filings, mix again and then press into your fountain.
