Checkout this video on metacafe, The guy adds "organic powdered dye" to ordinary KN/SU mix, and he gets a fantasic dense orange smoke. Apparently the dye is available from hobby stores. Has anyone heard of this?

Holy Smoke! (pun intended) that was amazing, I have no idea what the dye is, but it mentions that Blue dye is also good?

Organic Dye is a bit too vague really, as Most dyes are organic.

if I have your permission and the site owners, I can ask on a Science forum if you like?

Awesome video, and yes you can link to the video without permission, that's the point with metacafe.

I'm also interested in where to get this dye from.

Ok Dokes, I`ve posted it and asked, I`ll put any helpful replies I get in here.

I`m dying to know myself, as this will help me No End with a new Pyro type effect(s) I`m designing currently.

yeah, well said! unlike Rhodamine B and 6G, they cost quite a bit :(

I have some here (amongst others) and although you don`t need Much as it`s visible in parts ber Billion, it`s real expensive.

I'm having second thoughts after watching this video

http://www.metacafe....at_scary_stuff/

A nice faked video on the dangers of binary explosives, he did post him email down the bottom so ive sent a message asking for some more detail on the 'stuff from a hobby store'.

I will add that after the last 20 minutes experiments that the addition of the sodium bicarbonate to the 60/40 kn03 sugar mix does make a large difference to the smoke output from my smoke comp.

Ill try to video the 2 comps with and without sod bicarb to show.

As far as I know, the usual Potassium Chlorate / Lactose / Dye (eg para-nitroaniline red or synthetic indigo blue) mix is chosen because it burns at a relatively low temperature and so doesn't 'combust' the dyes, just vaporises them.

In this demo, the author seems to have just cooled down KN / Sucrose with baking soda so as to make it compatible with these ordinary dyes. I have often wondered if you could just use a packet of, say, concentrated fabric dye to achieve the same effect.... Maybe 'hobby store dye' is similar.

Time for some experiments I think B)

More dyes listed here: http://chemistry.abo...oloredsmoke.htm

I`ve had a reply, and it`s suggested that it is an Aniline dye that`s used, as used in Commercial smoke flares and Boat Flares.

I didn't realise it was made by the same author as the "binary explosive" scare video, and TBH I didnt check it at all really. The fact that no-one seems to have heard of it before kinda calls it into question, but I want to believe! Aniline dyes have been discussed here many times before, and are well known for being expensive, but the fact he uses loads makes me think again. Maybe he's just making these videos for the producers rewards ($7,000 so far) or maybe not, I guess the only way to find out is to hunt down some of the dye.
