Right, so i finally got my sulphur the othe day (500g for about 4quid including p&p) plus along with my homemade charcoal and KN03 i already have, i got all the ingredients for my first attempt at Black Powder.

My scales arrive in the post sometime this week, and i was thinking about making a gram or 2, just to start with.

I'll be using a mortar and pestle, as making/buying a ball mill seemed a bit excessive for a first try.

My first few projects will be: (apart from some ok BP)
  • black match
  • polumna
just something relativly simple..

First question, once ive weighed out my ingredients and put them into my mortar, should i add water before i beging to crush/mix them together? or just be gentle.. they are made of ceramic material so im hoping its none sparking..

Ill update this with pictures of how my experiments go

Hi there are two options; I would advise doing a search for ball mills on this site. I made my own ball mill; it makes it extremely easy to make BP without blisters on the palms of your hands. The pestle and mortar method is not the best, however you can make decent BP by using the CIA method, again do a search on this site as I am sure there will be a good amount of info on it (mix and powder ingredients, add water, heat and then bring out of solution in pure alcohol (meths will do) wring out in Hessian cloth or similar and granulate).
Phew that was close.
