where did you find it and what makes you think its a chem, i don't think it would even exist. It would be on hell of a molecule anyway

Its a hydrocarbon, which exist in bigger molecules than that. My best guess is that it was a plastic additive or a fat of some sort.

Pardon the funky translation from Google, this came from http://www.infofireworks.com, a Chinese site :

(1) phenolic resin (PE), Molecular formula : C48H42O7, molecular weight : 730. Phenolic resin yellow, transparent, amorphous bulk material, containing elements of free and was slightly red, the proportion of 1.25 ~ 1.30, soluble in alcohol, do not dissolve in water, water, acid and weak base solution stability. Concentrated alkali and strong thermal decomposition it is not only adhesive is combustible, request softening point above 85 ℃.

Elsewhere on the site, it is referred to by brand names, including novolac, which has been used for comet comps for a long time.

That's interesting .... this stuff definately exists the Chinese still use it a lot in their fireworks. I wonder if it's any relation to red gum ? (which, I know, has no formula as it's a mixture of organic gums from a yucca ...). Perhaps it's like shellac ?

Anyone know what LAC is then ?

It's more like epoxy. A hard setting synthetic resin compound.

it`s the same stuff the old PCBs where made of, in fact if you get them hot enough with a soldering iron you can actually smell the phenol.

pure phenol on it`s own isn`t particularly good for you, no.
however it`s detectable by smell long before it reaches toxic levels.

Look up emolecule - finds all sorts of things.

PCB - printed circuit board - essential to life as we know it.
PCB - per/poly chlorinated bi-phenol -- Best avoided
