I was wondering does anyone have any basic problems to recommend for someone just getting into pyrotechnics?
Recommended books would also be useful.
I would like to ease myself into the hobby.
I been recommended star mines as a good experience which are easy to make and safe later beginner project but does anyone have any suggestions?
I am currently looking for best places to order remaining tools and safety gear before I even think about buying the chemicals but lining up some basic problems will help a lot. If theres a book with a good mix of basic pyrotechnics projects I would be very glad if you could recommend it to me.

For a start employ a basic scheme of learning to practise pyrotechnics.
Sulphur, Potassium nitrate, charcoal: there are almost limitless things you can do with these three chemicals, start from there by trying to make decent black powder and work from there.

Good point. Out of interest is there any preferred choice type of charcoal?

There is an unbeliveable amount of information on this forum explaining things about black powder making, just search deeply and you will find lots of information, how to charcoal, what to charcoal, what kind of sulfur and potassium nitrate to use. (willow and alder are the best woods for charcoaling, and if they're unavailable, any other fast growing softwood tree.)
as for taking such a strategical approach into pyro... i've never seen that before in my life. most pyros start by playing with matches when they were 5-6 years old, then realising that if you put all the head together you get a big flare, and then you start researching through your teen years what chems make big booms, and you try your best to get them, then make something explosive, then do the research and realise you nearly could have killed yourself, then read up about all the other cool stuff you could do, and join a forum and by that stage we've all usually got some level of experience, but i agree in saying BP is teh best place to start, just search the forum for a thread called "making black powder"
