I've found an SFX course being run in March Looks like being £400 for three days residential. And looks really interesting from squibs to Nonel and HE.
Is anyone seriously interested. MUST be over 18, no debate!

I know the one you mean - it looks very good and they've been running that course for quite some time now. I'm going to sign up for it, but it'll be later in the year, whenerver they run the next one, as I'm committed in March. Definitely on my list though.
Do it safe - Do it right - or - Don't do it at all.

If we put up ten committed members at £400 each we can have a course to ourselves! and for a 3/4 day course inc materials and accommodation that's a real cheap holiday!

It does sound promising but my main aim for 2008 is to gain a few more widely recognised formal pyro qualifications for future use.

There is Stage Pyro - I can get an approved course if a group want
There is Special Effects(Pyro) This course is an industry approved one
There is Cat3 and Cat4 fireworks BPA and others accredit courses
Then there is High Explosive work. and this forum does not go there but expect to need military training to get far.
For Pyro and fireworks there is no regulatory body so far. BUT the insurers all have their favourite ways of assessing competence. To be a professional firework display operator you need to have storage to MSER, to have insurance for firework shows, and to prove competence to your suppliers to get supplies of fireworks and fuse etc.
Every relevant course you pass increases your industry knowledge, increases your industry contacts, and gets you a certificate which says to law enforcement people that you care to learn and to do the job safely.

What would be covered in the special effects course?
I have the opportunity to work with a local Panzer reenactment division (already done a bit of informal work with them). It would be great if I could get some formal training which would be useful in this respect (battlefield pyro etc).
So if that is the course that people want to go for then put me down for a place.
