Well, Fireworks International's 2008 catalogue is out- and it looks good. Lots and lots of stuff under £10 , cakes, wheels, candles etc- so a good brand for those who don't like to spend too much money! Also good variety, and most cakes have a single effect (unlike EG Men Shun, where most stuff is mixed effects.)

Whats most interesting is that they are selling Big Rockets still, because of something they call "PyroMesh" which apparantly can be used to transport big rockets etc within regulations. As such, they also have big airb0mb cakes too (in their own words) thanks to pyromesh.

OK, interest in fireworks to be resumed in the spring. It usually is. ;)

bear in mind though that the extra special packing will proberly mean slighly extra pricing to cover it

From what I've seen, prices havn't gone up by a great ammount- all prices are in the catalogue, they look just to have gone up by maybe 5%-10% depending on the firework , which in fairness isn't bad.

The big "pyromesh" one is Thunderking- 100 shots for £50. I have a feeling it will be quite good, although not a traditional air0mb.

i think you will find its quite loud the reason its shipped in the special boxes is to get round the reclassification of large cakes that contain over the new permitted ammount of flash powder per tube

new box and packaging = old reg products

the transport regulations which give the 1.nx category are dependant on both the device AND the packaging so change the packaging and the product can be re-subjected to classification tests, and it may come out as a lower transport category.

Added:
However a firework may fail BS 7114 so become a professional user only device even though it classifies when packed, as 1.4G

Yeah- I think thats the idea behind Pyromesh. It could be that flashpowder fireworks arn't gone after all!

Considering the amount of money they will make by licencing pyromesh to other companies, I doubt they will need to hike prices by much.;)

I am pretty certain that other companies have come up with their own interpretation of this mesh :)

So what are the likely results? Will there still be "old style" flashpowder fireworks on the market? Or am I being a bit naive?

From the shops I have spoken to there seems to be a run off period until 2010 for big rockets, flash etc. so direct purchase from shops should still be OK - shop storage is more of a problem as the quantities allowed for 1.3 are significantly less than 1.4 (1/4 the NEQ i believe) and need to be separate from the 1.4 storage but quite a few shops seem to be intending to keep separate storage and seeing how things go at least in the short term. Higher transport costs to shops will probably be less significant than transport to consumers purely because of the econony of a larger shipment. I would imagine if pyromesh or whatever re-packaging is going to allow easier shipping as 1.4 then we haven't seen the end of big rockets etc.

I see that there will still be consumer demand for them as they do add some poke to a cat 2/3 display and so retailers will do whatever they can to keep supplying them as long as there is a decent profit in it. The key thing to remember is this type of firework has not been made illegal, just had its shippping class changed which adds costs and extra hoops to jump through so long as it is fiancially worthwhile.

My personal approach has been to stock up my personal stash of larger rockets to cover the transition period or at least to let me have rockets for a short while once they do disappear. I have only bought them thogh when I have been able to get a good deal on them (e.g. 3" ball heads at £15 on BOGOF - so a not unreasonable £7.50 each).

you still have to abide by the same rules as the shops do with regard storage of said items though and if you have a personal storage lisence your limit drops from 250kg net to 30kilos net (unless thier in the new boxes) etc etc

As far as I am aware the 14 day rule still applies which allows for storage of 5kg NEQ for an unlimited period for personal use. I am making sure I stay under this limit as they will only be used for relatively small private displays. To be honest I can't justify having a huge stock anyway because of the cost involved.

i carnt fully recall but i know certain rules or laws have been changed this year with regard storage in order to try and combat the "white van man"

as for storage im up to my limit but have the option for another store elswhere fortunatly

What Daedalus said sounds right- it is if the fireworks are for personnal use only (IE you are not selling them.)

Its a sensible rule, I think, that acknowledges the use of Cat 3 fireworks by consumers.
