hmm. ive seen many formula for colored smoke, but once one has assembled the necessary components, i cant find how to actually make a smoke star. ie binders, best method ect?

I think they are mainly built as pillbox stars, which allows the use of a nozzle to cool the smoke down and reduce the amount of flames, however it is a very time consuming method, and it also increases the fallout. A shell full of those will take you a long time tube rolling and pressing!

Could be worth trying a normal star rolling or pressing technique by adding a binder, but I think the flame suppression of the tube and choke is needed to prevent the dye being consumed in the flame.
You can never have a long enough fuse...
