Just a quick post to say hi and watch out for me asking newbie questions! sorry!
Each year I read up on pyro and getting started...each year I never seem to quite get the time!
...This is the year!
Ordered myself a book as recommended in a post...should give me some insight into basic pyro through the years, perhaps help me get started.
Any useful links to 'getting started' topics etc would be really appreciated...want to start with some basics and move forward, but really tempting when someone is talking about shells with fireballs! I must hold back!!! lol.
Just a hello really... spk soon.
Ben.

And welcome.
You seem to have the right idea. Get plenty of information, start simple and build up.
Have fun, stay safe!

once you get started be prepared to be completely enthralled,
a good place to begin is to become aquainted with BP,, its excellent reading and experimenting, and you can find out most if not all you need to know right here on this site, in the Black Powder threads,,

...think I need to order some supplies.
What should I aim to be making that doesn't involve having loads of chems?
Thanks,
Ben.

Hi there, yes...looking forward to my BP experimenting!
...think I need to order some supplies.
What should I aim to be making that doesn't involve having loads of chems?
Thanks,
Ben.
For starters I'd try and make some BP and blackmatch. Then move onto some (small to start) fountains and then mines (will need some stars). These can all be made with very few chems...such as those needed for BP and some different sizes of Al and charcoal, plus a few other odds and ends such as dextrin. After that, and once you have good quality BP, it'll be time to look at shells.

Search the forum, very often the answers really are here already. Plan to avoid flash powder for a year or five, it really is boring but occasionally necessary. Flash really is dangerous, you can easily get a surprise or lose previously attatched parts - fingers hands and eyes especially.
Keep mannequins and watermelons away from fireworks..they always get hurt..

You don't need a mill, or to be able to make BP. You can use very simple tooling (just a wooden dowel). They also look good, burn for a fair while and are pretty safe.
Thanks for the comments about the Green Man - yes it is mine!
