they used to list every type of motor you could imagine. from dc 9v motors, to 400v ac power motors......all cheap...

With modern machines the speed can vary, with the motor having lots of wires or a inverter. Look for a old-ish motor. The one I have has 4 live (brown) wires, 2 for forward speed, fast & slow and the same for reverse. All I did was find the wire for the slow speed......Just be careful...Risk of electric shock!, which I think common sense will mitagate the risk there
But its good yeh? works fine no overheating?

Yeah, works great, it does heat up if I'm running it for a few Hr, but I have a nice big 12v fan over the motor

a man after my own heart.
Keep it simple.....if it gets hot. cool it down....
Brilliant.
i have a small wood lathe here somewhere....that will do the job.......

Basically took the thing apart. Motor, belt and the pulley off the back of the drum (quite hard to remove). Made frames out of MDF to support motor and the rollers (made them, quite easy). I started with 1.5" rollers and ended up with a 4" drive roller. without the math, it's turning the jar at around 95 RPM. I'm using a 1.3lt jar and 1Kg of ceramic media, I only mill in 50g batches.
I'll add though for others.. If you think your mill is not preforming as it should, experiment with the batch size.
Thats by far the most energy-wasting milling I´ve ever heard of
I´ve designed my ball mill to be highly efficient (regarding
media, power consumption, speed) and I can mill 300g batches
using a 250W motor (using coarse, bulky charcoal) or 500g
batches using powdered chemicals.
I´ve used the passfire calculator to adjust everything though.
This is in no way meant a s a show-off but just to point at that very low efficiency!
Making 50g batches of ultra-hot meal is great, but not using a 1KW washing machine
motor

Thats the drum and media I´m using. It´s 16mm by 18mm stainless steel media which has extremely low carbon but high
chrome content. "Absolutely" sparkless. It´s the alloy passfire recommends.

Media after first few milling operations...
That was just a test shot to tell the volume of the media. It was thoroughly cleaned before first use (no filings etc).
Drum + media is about 9Kg. It can run for 8hrs, the motor doesn´t get hot...

How long do you mill your meal for?
P.S. it should be possible to make a 250 watt motor turn a mill big enough to make far bigger batches than 500g. However to stay legal in the UK 100g is the limit. As this is what I am sure Portfire is aiming to do.

You´re right with the motor. It´s just that this was the smallest geared motor I was able to get my hands
on.
Milling time for lift and break charge style powder is 3-5 hrs. So let´s assume I´d like
to make 500g of lift bp, it´d just 1,25KW of energy which is about 0,25euro...

Could you post a link or somit...do they have PM's on this site? Ceramic ball mills? I thought a ball mill consisted of metal motor and metal roller/w.e, metal/plstic pulley?
Anyway, lets have a look at it then :S
Can't post a link, do you have an e-mail address I can send details?

Right managed to throw somit together
Click the image for a larger view, the original files were 3072 x 2304! But photobucket scaled them down
Enjoy (and thank you to everyone who helped me )
