Fellow Pyros,
I'm trying to improve the burst of my shells. I've been using BP coated rice hulls for "soft breaks", like willow shells, and adding about 3g of whistle powder for regular shells. I'm not getting very symettrical breaks. I tried 2g of flash powder which gave a better break, but the bright flash was a little distracting from the dimmer stars.
Any suggestions appreciated.
What is the "best" burst for a 1 1/2 " to 2" shell ?

I presume you are using round shells as opposed to cylindrical shells, you are going to be hard pressed to get a symmetrical break from a 2” or smaller, best to go up to 3” and on these a 1g flash booster is plenty I find. Star sizing and neat loading of the shell is needed to get a good round break

You can use Perchlorate compositions with heavy confinement, or, if you feel up to managing the responsibility, H3 (Chlorate and charcoal). Good whistle will work. You could work on that a bit more.
Other than that, there is not much other than BP + flash. The flash is an issue, but it can be reduced by using finer Aluminium, an over oxidised flash mix or by using bright stars to mask it.

If you're a member of Passfire, look for some posts of Eugene Yurek. Well, first make sure to find a comfy chair he is very ........thorough. He's been able to make 2" ball shells break much like the commercial stuff I can get. He does this with BP on hulls, and a NC granulated whistle mix (1g I think). If you're using plastic shells, try pasting them with a few layers of paper.
