In my local TV news (points west at 6:30pm, BBC1) there was a report on firework battles in Birstol. What followed was footage of youths, wearing hoods, igniting multi-shot cakes while pointing them at each other. After this their was a man (from HSE?) going on about 25m distances, needing a football field in your back garden to use them safely (my garden is longer than 25m by quite some distance, and my house is surrounded by acres of farmland, and I have the farmers permission to use the land.) I felt so strongly about the council's moves to ban them that I e-mailed Points-West with the email that is displayed below;

"Dear Madam or Sir,

I watched your report on Multi-shot Fireworks in Bristol with some amount of concern.

I have enjoyed fireworks in displays (whether at my home or professionally fired) as long as I can remember, and I particularly enjoy seeing a Multi-Shot set-piece going off.

I also feel that these are much safer than having many small fireworks, as with the multi-shot barrages there is only one point of ignition, so once the fuse has been lit you retreat to a safe distance, rather than having to go back and forth between the safe area and the firing area to light individual devices.

As with all things that require responsibilty, I know that there will be a small minority of people that will misuse them. Banning them, however, often increases the problem, as people will turn to the black-market and crime to get these fireworks.

Cars are very dangerous things, and people misuse them (as in drink-driving) and people get killed and injured in much higher proportions while using or going about their business around cars then with fireworks. Even with these statistics their would be no mention of banning or restricting their use or sale.

Add to these risks the fact that cars are one of the major contributors towards global warming and climate change, you begin to realise that cars really are lethal devices, whether compared to any fireworks or just being considered alone.

Yours Sincerly,

Alexander E-Smith,
(Aged 14)
Tetbury, Glos"

You could have said about smoking, that the government won't ban it even though it kills because they make money on it in duties, so why don't they put duty on fireworks and do the same?

I have to say also that its not entirely true that accidents on the roads haven't affected all drivers because they have. Many drivers have suffered due to the actions of irresponsible drivers, like quality amateurs here being put down by kewl bombers.

Its a school. One of my daughters goes there (she's 15). I'm just down the road, in the middle of nowhere in particular.
