I was just wondering about using boosters for breaking medium size warimono type shells that are using KP on rice hulls as the break charge and are being well pasted.

Would it be more appropriate to use the more gaseous whistle boosters than, for instance, flash that may outrun the KP in the build up of pressure, or is this not the case? Would a flash bag or whistle type booster with BP rather than KP on the carrier be the way to go?

From reading Shimizu F.A.S.T, there was a transition from H3 to KP on the grounds of sulphur contamination from the stars although they are separated by tissue though I would suspect any dampness in the stars could cause leaching through the tissue although I believe you can use cellophane instead. Was this a factory environment problem were contamination can be overlooked on the shop floor?

I suppose what I am saying is can you cut out the KP or BP with boosters and just use H3 with care without going to chlorate stars?

Thank you for your time

With a medium sized Warimono well pasted and using KP to burst it, no booster should be required. With good pasting, the power should equal that of H3.

If your stars are well made and well primed, flash powder will not harm the stars, but if you desire to use whistle, it'll work too. I can not see flash bursting the shell before the the other things (burst, stars) light, unless the burst is easily compressible in to a fire-block.

While the issue with chlorates and sulfur should not be an issue in the scenario you describe if they are both of good purity, it could still be a good idea to stick with H3 for chlorate stars, especially if you are unsure.

Whenever I've tried to boost KP, it always goes way overboard. They practically turn into salutes. It's very sensitive to pressure increases. A few extra layers of paper is much better than some whistle or flash. 1g of slow flash turned a 4" ball into a 6" sized break of black stars.
