I am in urgent need of advice,
Where do i stand with homemade pyrotechnics and the law?

the basic law says you can make 100g of composition at any one time for testing and evaluating purposes. though some would say there is is a kind of a gray area when the composition is placed in a tube ect whether it would still be fine. this is one of many laws the UKPS are trying to clear up to promote a safe and legal hobby.
as long as you do everything in a safe, professional manor and test your pyro on privet land the law will be on your side.
why are you in some kind of trouble ?

As it's generally agreed, you can experiment with 100g or less of composition, but you cannot make a practical firework. It's a criminal offence to make a firework outside a licensed factory. That's not to say that there are not a lot of people doing this...
The police are not generally interested once they know it is not a bomb factory, but if they have the slightest worry, your house will be surrounded by blues lights and army vehicles, as the average PC does not have the specialist knowledge.
They will call in bomb disposal. I had a long chat with one of their guys. He was very sympathetic to our cause.
UKPS are trying to change/clarify the law, but with each answer from the HSE taking from 3 - 6 months it's a long, slow process.

UK Explosive law & legislation, should have the information you require, but it is a bit of a grey area.I believe it is one of the aims of the UKPS to get the law on this clarified.
Needless to say you do anything silly and someone gets hurt don't be surprised if you end up before the courts.
