Hi
I have trawled thru lots and lots of postings thru the news groups and UKR&P forums..All looking for the word aluminium powder..etc..
And i still have some questions to ask about it..Nearly All of the chemicals used in pyro that i require ,i will be able to get(at a price!) or make myself..
The only thing i cant make (or find out how to make is metal flake / powder) ..now i have just manged to find a small industrial unit that makes Aluminium powder which is for pyrotechnic use..Now i want to phone / ring visit them to see if i can have a small amount but...
i am thinking will they sell it to me?..is there any legal reason for me not to buy very fine alu powder? in the UK?I have found that it is prohibted to export fine alu powder but cant find any mention that it is a controlled substance?..what would any one use very fine alu for?..the only thing i can think of is if they ask what do i need it for??
is for model rocketry?.. I hate being stuck ...there is always a workround .its useually takes time and but will get there..
Has any forum member actually got any real pyro alu?..
Cheers
sasman
Ps im not some young teenage nutter intent on making loud big bang!! i have been there done that!..I intend to make good pyro and for that i need all the tools/chemicals...

Depends what you want it for. It would make good flake I think for sparks as you dont want it too fine but wont make good flash.

Would this supplier happen to be in South Yorkshire? If so, they are nice people, but only supply in drum quantities. Also, I dont know what it would take to convince them to sell you Dark Pyro alu. There is only one thing that is used for!

I see it as: If someone holds a pyro specific chem, who the bloody hell do they think theyre going to sell it to? itll never get sold unless you sell it to pyros. But then again they may just want liscnense proof.......

Yes ...
Stuart some of the aluminium powder would be used for flash..also for sparks etc....The link you gave was ok but here is a link with more detailed info..

http://members.shaw....er/grinder.html

I have only just started my pyro hobby and only just received my ball mill..
So making and needing very fine alu is some way off..its just that it appears that dark pyro alu is very hard to obtain..in the UK ..adamw yes the source is in south yorkshire :) .
i live locally so i will pop in and see if i can sort something out ..dont need large amount a small cupfull will quench my curiosity..I have read a lot in newsgroups and there is a lot of misinformation on making flash etc.. so i will be ordering BLAST WAVES & FLASH POWDERS video from AFN to get some concise information .. is it possible to make very fine alu good enuf for flash..?..Im 100% sure that if i cant sort out a supply over the coming months i will have a go at making my own :) ....
cheers

Aluminium powder is not restricted or controlled... if someone won't sell you it, then it's because there company policies have come in to play.

Infact thats the same with most pyro chemicals.

First you have to convince the supplier you are responsible to hold what is the fuel for explosives (thunderflashes etc) and Rocket Propellant (Arianne rocket boosters). Second you must have a secure place to keep it to prevent others misusing it.
A small trade pack is a 25kilo drum costing ca ?1000
There is also a problem that Al powder reacts with water to liberate Hydrogen gas, so any "cover" use involving aqueous media will be refused.

The guy who's selling the Aluminium powder on eBay has loads of other chemicals; pot nitrate, chlorate, perchlorate, sulphur etc. looks like we could have a UK version of Skylighter starting up!
