Hi
Just looking at skylighter and looking for some carboard tubes and am confused as to what size tubes to buy for rockets?..the size of rocket i would like to make is an orb or whoppa size rocket but havent a clue what size tube they use?
My estimate is a 4 or 8 ounce? rocket.
The 8 ounce rocket is 5/8 ID 3/16 wall thickness 1" OD 6" 1/4 long
The 4 ounce rocket 1/2 ID 1/8 wall thickness 3/4 OD 5" long..
Has anyone made a good 4 or 8 ounce rocket? and what weight payload can they carry and to what height?..Also what size shell is the orb or big whoppa rocket equal to? Also has anyone made whistling rockets or strobe rockets?.any video clips of them? Has any one made 1,2,4 or 6lb rocket in the UK?
Cheers
sasman

Sounds like you need a 6-8 ounce motor at a pure guess, Although I've only made very small rockets and cannot be certain.

Orb rockets have a 3" shell payload.

According to Firework review website the Whoppa specs are as follows:

1. 3 inch Shell Payload
2. Fuse Cover 3.5" long.
3. 1" Diameter Metal Rocket Motor (later version uses 1.25" but allegedly
less succesful)
4. Rocket stick retained 2" into casing

No other dimentions available.

PS if you're wondering, 2 versions have been produced as the original rocket ceased production when the factory blew up! Production was transferred and this resulted in an altered spec.

Note: I accept no liability for inaccuracies (its up to you to check!) and I supply these dimensions for academic purposes only.

Can't help too much with your orb rocket but I can give you a bit of advice concerning whistle and stobe rockets. You CANNOT pound/consolidate them with a hammer. They need to be pressed. The specs you will have to come up with on your own.

I haven't checked but I would venture a guess that Skylighter (or AFN) sells the literature to help with construction. Try to find something put out by Steve LaDuke. Doc Barr, Fred Partin and John Stienberg are other notables on the subject that come to mind. Find something recent if you can.

While your waiting for your books and supplies to arrive.....go out and get yourself a big piece of lexan and a good press.

Passfire has good info on whistle mix in Sept. issue of this year. There is a couple strobe rocket formulas but there is an important note at the bottom of Docs that should be taken seriously.
