Has anyone ever tried Niobium as a spark producer or for any other effect? Looking at its precaution it seems like quite a reactive metal though no health risks are associated with it which is good. I have a chance to buy some and wonder if its of any use.

There is a study centre for Tantalum/Niobium; http://tanb.org/tic

Given one of its main mining areas is in brazil, you might want to contact forum member `Toivo`.
