I'm doing some research on naval Flare Drifters during WW1 but more specifically WW2.
These vessels were usually requistioned civilian trawlers or drifters with basically the same crew onboard.
Flare drifters were used for various functions but usually to mark minefields or other such naval boundaries.
The only specific information I have that maybe of interest to your members is this:-
to 12 trawlers equipped with "Brock" 1,000,000 candle power flares were employed to mark both sides of the Dover-France Mine Barrage. At first 6 trawlers marked each end with flares burning throughout darkness hours. The gaps between the trawlers were filled with P boats,monitors and as many drifters and minesweepers that could put to sea. These used their searchlights instead of flares. As this proved sucessful the number of flare burners were cut to three each end and the remaining equipped trawlers (usually three) were placed close to the French coast to prevent submarine passage.
Apart from the flares and stowage for them the only reference I have seen to specially fitted equipment was the placing of a metal plate aft to protect the deck. I presume this was fitted as far aft as practical, have never seen a photo of this fit.
Any information relating to Brock flares and any equipment used for there use would be appreciated
