The title says it all really. Apart from annoying farmers, can I make my own? Or has this country gone completely raving bonkers!

im sure iv seen a tutorial around maybe from skylighter, quite easy to make really and if your making your own you have the added benefit of not adding asbestos into it like some manufactures

Nice one, cheers mate.....Oh I've made one, it's about 4.5' tall!! Though it's just a balloon at the moment and it's just that, a balloon. Put a burning wad at the bottom and it's a sky lantern, apart from the obvious fire hazard I can't see any problem but in this day and age, who bloody knows.

I used to make large sky lanterns with a local youth group . We put our address and phone number on them .That was a big mistake,I had a 10 mile drive to go and clear masses of soggy tissue paper covering an angry old ladies garden. Sodium silicate solution often called water glass is a good cheap fire proofing solution for tissue paper but it does stiffen the tissue paper slightly . When making the lanterns dry the glued seams with a hair dryer as you go, Mig welding wire makes a good frame for the flame - often a white spirit soaked piece of glass fibre tissue as wickwas used . If you want instant results use a wheelie-bin bin bag with a mig wire frame sellotaped into it and a bit of paraffin wetted rag in the centre > The ballon cannot easily be seen, just eerie flames drifting across the sky. I got a write up in a local newspaper of people seeing flames drifting across the night sky .
