So i hear everyone saying Kitty Litter is the way to get cheap bentonite clay. I just been to my local Co-op and the onlyu offerings they had where...

Non clumping Sepiolite clay

Non clumping Naturally ocurring clay (bentonite) odour control fragrance

So where on the high street is best and what one? It's for rocket nozels and plugs

Cheers

I use the cheap nasty Sainsbury's own brand cat litter & it works just fine.

Be sure it's dry before you use it. It can shrink after ramming if it's a bit damp & dries out later.

Been told about sticking 1kg on a baking tray, bake for ten mins @ 100c, add 4 tealights - there case and wick, mix it then grind it up and thats said to make really good stuff

I've Waitrose, Tesco, Lidl, Co-op, Bugins near me

I've never added anything to mine. I just use it as is, no grinding. It all gets crushed when it's rammed & my gut feeling is the sharp bits help to 'bite' into the wall of the tube.

When I was tweaking the fuel mix for a new set of tooling, I had a few CATOs, but it just blew the tube to bits - the nozzle was intact ! So it must work !!

you need the cheapest there is no added smells or agents just plain ole clay,
"grog" is added to the clay along with wax to help it bite and avoid shrinkage, i use airfloat ish clay with about 10% coarse material for the bite factor.

i have tescos, comes in a black bag dirt cheap but be careful how you grind it if you do as it has small stones that will ruin any blade type mill i pestle and mortar mine [ not fun] but i dont use much.

dan.

Hi,

I've used a product from Pets at Home, previously, that was bentonite. They don't seem to sell the product I have anymore, but this one sounds promissing:

If it is bentonite, then you don't even need to grind it as it's formed into small granules.

Cheers.

Interesting stuff. When I used to make rockets I tried all sorts of mixes. I settled for a molochite grit / bentonite powder / wax mix in the end. The molochite really made it bite into the tube and reduced nozzle erosion, the wax just stopped it absorbing moisture in storage.

Bentonite should be cheap enough in powdered form, I pay about £8 for a 25kg sack (admittedly on larger volumes)
Phew that was close.

I've just found this is as good as the commercial bentonite when ground up very fine.

The nozzels are as solid, and I'm also using it to make green sand for metal casting.
Our saviours : In the ninth century, a team of Chinese alchemists trying to synthesize an "elixir of immortality" from saltpeter, sulfur, realgar, and dried honey instead invented gunpowder.
