Nomex fireproof balaclavas form http://www.demon-twe..._Underwear/2082 and Here http://www.demon-twe..._Underwear/2082 may protect the head better than nothing.
Trouble is that the balaclava interferes with the use of ear defenders unless you cut slots for them to pass through.
I'm also looking at electronic hearing protection. Ear muffs that isolate but have an electronic by-pass so that you can hear quiet noises like talk but the loud bangs are attenuated correctly. you can get all sorts of add ons for them for money including bluetooth!
