i was just reading about using the molar mass and valance to work out strochiometic rations. i was working through some examples but was a cant find is how to calculate the valances of molecules.

for instance KClO4 has a valance of -8, NH4NO3 has a valance of -2, i know this because these values were provided, but how are they calculated? and what about for more complex fuels like heximine etc?

Are you thinking about formal charge? By the way, nothing in KClO4 has a valence of -8, nor does anything in NH4NO3 have a valence of -2. You may want to find a better source :)
