There is a service in the US called TechShop which are a chain of public access machine shop full of tools and machine equipment. You buy a membership and can go and use any of the equipment you like for your hobby projects etc. and they also run training courses. A bit like a gym membership, but for geeks.

Does anyone know of anything similar in the UK as I would love access to a fully equipped workshop?

Possibly not quite what you're looking for in terms of full machine shop, but have you heard of Hackspace?

How well-fitted they are depends on your location, I've been to my local one and it's great.

You could try looking for model railway clubs,
I have one near me that boasts an incredible workshop for 20 per year membership.
Unfortunatley its only available tuesdays which is no good to me.
I think the Lluton Model engineering society closed but there is still one at Bedford i believe.

This is a good idea, have you tried approaching your local technical college? I know Havering College at Ardleigh Green in Essex has engineering workshops.

I have known people join metalwork or woodwork evening classes to pursue a favourite hobby, trouble is that it is expensive and usually only two hours in one evening a week.

Keep mannequins and watermelons away from fireworks..they always get hurt..

I am one of them.

Very limited though.
Local school has a superb workshop, some machines idle since new.

Speaking to principals/teachers there is a possibility of using premises as a club venue BUT it needs the interest of enough people.
Most ME workshops i attend have people of similar age to myself.
No youngsters, they seem to prefer sitting at home playing with the latest dongleberry/ wogglebox.
