Hi all

I have 100g of the above that I purchased before realising that for what I make I do not need to worry about magnesium as I can do without and use alternatives. I really do not want it kicking about the house (shed) given how poisonous it is.

Any safe methods of disposal people can recommend?

Is there anything I can combine it with to render it harmless while burning maybe as a formula etc?

Maybe reduce with iron sulphate in the presence of sulphuric acid to turn it into chrome III from Chrome VI which is pretty safe. Neutralise resultant solution with bicarb or similar. Evapourate to dryness and dispose.
Phew that was close.

Or if you're into brewing/winemaking, sodium or potassium metabisulphite (camden tablets) will also reduce it to Cr(III) very effectively.
Trying to do something very beautiful but very dangerous very safely....

If you're going to get rid of it, you might as well do something useful with it like make copper chromite, which is a fairly strong whistle catalyst. Disposing of Cr (III) may not be a significant amount easier anyway. It's still not something you want to toss in a dump or flush down the drain.

Would it be useful to any other rocketeer (catalyst) or magnesium user?
