Hi Everybody,

It has been suggested that we arrange a number of visits to various places around the country that have some connection with Pyrotechnics and Explosives.

The idea being that find out where members would want to visit, set a date and everyone who is interested gets there at the agreed time, so we can all enjoy a good day out and hopefully beer and pizza after whatever entertainment/education the day provides.

I'll get the ball rolling then - Is anyone interested in an Away Day too any of the following?
  • The Royal Gunpowder Mills (Waltham Abbey in Essex)
  • Explosion (Priddy's Hard, Portsmouth)
  • Royal Armouries Fort Nelson (Southampton)

Or is there somewhere else you'd like to visit?

Please let us know and we'll try and get something organised.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Understand there was a visit to Kimbolton a few years ago. Was it any good ?

I'd be interested in something like that.

The kimboltons visit was exceptional, if the ukps ever get another chance to visit i would get your name down asap as it will be fully booked very quick. ron gave some great talks about his life building up kimbolton fireworks as a manufacture and display company and was rather nice live demonstrations of star rolling pressing and making giant gerbs.

The Royal Gunpowder Mills sound interesting,

Royal Gun Powder Mills would greatly interest me.

I've been on a UKPS visit to Kimbolton, it was fantastic. The factory was on short time then and Rev Ron Lancaster was proud of his factory and happy to explain things, whether the company has time to admit a party again... and whether Rev Ron Lancaster is inclined to conduct a tour party...

It was a excellent day, we even got our books signed by Ron at the end of the visit.

As for the days out i am happy to go with the flow as long as my diary permits.

Not much point.

For those that haven`t been, Kimboltons factory tour a few years ago is a must see experience, Ron Lancasters guided tour talk/anecdotes was even more facinating.

I visited the Royal Gunpowder Mills last year when they had a Nov 5th firework display/gunpowder plot theme < (play for kids at there theatre was annoying) - although the armoury section was interesting + there was a re-enactment society firing gunpowder from 17th century weaponary which was fun + fire poi demo from an attractive girl was equally mesmerising although im not sure if it was her attire or the fire balls that got me hooked.

Don`t think I would go to Kimbolton`s again as its to soon for me (i ve seen it), but in a few years time most definately yes, the gunpowder mills is ok but not for more than 2 or 3 hours to kill in my opinion.

I like the idea of a trip to malta to take in a visit to a firework factory and then experience the various local religious/community firework festivals (both day & night) over say a 3 or 4 day period.

I have been a couple of times allready, but would love to go again and visit a factory or two, this is also the sort of trip that you could bring the other half and leave them by the pool while you go off and look at the things of pyro interest.

Yep, exactly my thinking starseeker, if enough of us decide to go as a group, it would almost definately work out cheaper!

Can you give some idea of the cost please ?

I have various well placed contacts within the commercial explosives sector. Would anyone be interested in factory visits to any of the remaining defence contractors who make pyro?
I cant promise anything but I am prepared to ask the questions and make the arrangements. (These visits can only be during the recognised working week - namely Mon-Fri 0800-1700).
