As i'm sure some of you have noticed there has been a conversation going on in the 'members forum' about a new initiative i have code named :) 'UKPS Outreach program' here is the start of the thread :

 Hi All

As part of a new initiative the idea of a outreach/promotion and fund raising program has come up. The main thinking behind this is to: acquire and fund PLI for the society, promote science in schools, promote the society, get members actively doing pyro talks and practical demonstrations for the public.

Obviously this is very much in the initial stages atm but i would like to get some input from members to try and gauge interest as it were, so:

Who would actually be interested in doing talks and demonstrations in front of a variety of audiences ?

Who would be interested in being involved in other ways: assistant, planning, promotion, safety etc ?

Does anyone have any previous experience of this kind of thing, who can, advise on a strategy, point out any pitifuls, help with contacts etc ?

Any suggestions for target groups, schools, science clubs, bonfire society's, firework displays/competitions, home education groups, theme parks, kids party's .......

Demos !! let's hear about your favorite science demos. Demos can be inside or outside so 'water to wine' and 'screaming jelly babies' all the way through to launching model rockets and thermite !! :o

I have posted this in the members forum as i feel paid up members of the society should get 'first dibs' as it were, plus i feel the level of commitment that this would involve is more likely to be found here.

Wats in it for us ? well "funding with fun" basically. If we can generate an income we can fund fun/interesting stuff for the society and justify the cost of PLI which we could also use to cover experimental manufacturing days at a variety of venues.

Several members have expressed an interest and i am currently working on involving/enlisting some help from some other institutes.

So why am i asking here ? Basically because we need more people and i don't see why 'non paid up members' shouldn't be invited to participate.

These demos will be mostly science based with a leaning towards energetic chemistry, firework effects techniques, firework safety and how to get in to the firework display industry.

How will it work ? Interested members will be grouped together, allocated predetermined areas within a certain radius of a central point in that area. The UKPS will distribute leaflets etc to these groups who will then work towards promoting these demos within that area.

The catch: I would like to see this initially funded by sed members, so i would expect a contribution from each participating member to cover PLI and promotional literature. This together with any other expenses will be refunded to you's by means of a percentage from income you bring in from demos and talks in your area.

The good bit: As Chairman i am not allowed to profit or receive an income from the society, and frankly i'm happy with that. You's on the other hand (as far as i'm aware) can. So once your area starts to make a profit you will get a percentage of that for your troubles. Exactly how this will work from a tax and employers liability perspective, i am yet to discuss with the committee and founder members of the society but from talks i have had to date i believe it is 'doable'

Who is eligible to partake ?

You must be over a certain age 21/25 i suspect (mostly for insurance purposes) obviously exceptions can be made in exceptional circumstances.

You will (if not already) have to become a 'paid up member' yes i know !!! but this ensures we have enough details of everyone involved to show 'duty of care'.

You must be of sound mind, although we don't want any boring gits !!!!

You will have to prove your competence to a panel, probably made up of committee members and industry professionals.

I would like to see any correspondence about this kept to this thread, however if you feel you would prefer to discuss any matters privately please feel free to PM me and i will do my best to answer any questions you might have.

This (i think) is a great opportunity for the society to get out and promote our cause and of course promote fireworks and science in schools and other bodies.

The committee has their phone meeting this Wednesday when we will discuss legal and practical details. I also hope to (subject to committee approval) be able to have all of the thread in the members forum about this moved to general public access in this thread.

We was hoping to be able to do some pyro demos at the MLE musical firework championships.

Unfortunately we have not been able to get permission for this, or doing lantern launches (still not sure who suggested the lantern launches  ) however we are allowed to have a stand at all/any of these events.

I was thinking about this and have come up with a 'plan B' which is to do the demos elsewhere video them and play them on a loop on the stand at the same time we can give out leaflets and generally promote demo's and the society in general.
