Hi,

What is the ideal size for colored star in 1,2-inch (30 mm) cylinder shells?

The burst look sparse and the stars will burn too long, when using 1/4-inch colored stars pressed with Wolter Pyro's star board. Only 25 to 30 pieces of 1/4" stars go in a 1,2-inch shell !

I hand press my COLORED STARS using a STAR BOARD. I use barium chlorate and potassium chlorate for my stars, because potassium perchlorate stars burn to slowly.

QUESTION: So, what will be the ideal size?  3⁄16" (4.8 mm) or even smaller 9⁄64 (3.6 mm) ?

Thanks,

I would use in a 1" shell approx 1/8th stars (rolled) In a 2" i would use 1/4" stars .

If you are using colour stars than these can look a bit sparse in the smaller shells but if you were to use some streamer style stars these would give you a fuller looking burst .

Btw be careful using the chlorate compositions as these can be very sensitive,if you are finding the perchlorate stars are burning to slowly ,if you are using tried and tested comps it maybe the way you are processing them which is making them slow,

Cheers

Vince

According to your chart, if you work it out, 3/16 for 2" and 1/8 for 1". You'd be better rolling them like what Vince said because they are easier to grade and you can make small rolled stars in no time at all (very satisfying). I start with mustard seed from Tesco, you get around,10,000 for 99 pence.

Nice chart by the way.

Hi,

Thanks for your answers. Now, I worked the chart out. The I.D. of my canister shells is 1,1-inch (28 mm). So 3,4 mm to 4 mm colored stars would be the best choice. I made a test with cut stars about in this size and the burn time and density was perfect. Thanks.

This is my new star roller from http://http://pyro-g...o.uk/Shop2.html, I bought on July 2014.
So, I will try to roll my compositon on mustard seed.
