It suddenly occurred to me the other day whilst doing my day job if solder balls would work as star cores? They are used to re ball BGA chips in the electronics trade and can be very small. Rather than using lead shot I wonder if they might be an alternative for rolling very small stars where the overall star might only be a few mm. I would imagine it would take a good deal of practice to roll small quantities using such cores and indeed might be so troublesome as to be not worth while, but as I said, it was just an idea.

Any thoughts?

That ebay link is for lead solder balls (I suspect they all are) So the only benefit would be slightly less lead dropped on the ground. I'm more inclined to consider millet or mustard seed or other small round bio items that would degrade naturally.

Link specifies "A bottle of 0.76mm leaded solder ball." Therefore I see little advantage over lead shot.  Lead solder is still used and permitted for memory and CPU soldering as the lead free solders don't work in those applications.

The link is for various sizes from .3mm it is also 63/37 so only 37% lead (better than shot) it's not to much damage to the planet if a few of us make a few grams and find it helpful to get the hang of rolling small stars. Besides I think the amount of cheap junk electronics that get scrapped by this throw away society we live in might be a bigger problem.
