The UK military has 2 handheld smoke devices, which look similar bar colour of container and labelling.  One which is dark green is labelled " TRAINING SMOKE SCREENING".  The other looks very similar and is light green labelled "SIGNAL SMOKE".  Can anyone please explain what the difference is?  Is there a different density or chemical make up of the product produce i.e. to stop IR penetration or is it the amount produced/duration.

Nothing to do with IR. One is an obscurant, one is a signal - to hide the operator or to display a signal he wishes to transmit.

Duration varies according to the specification, density generally strives to achieve.
