Sasman : You did very well with your hand made tubes and very nice stars too.
I had been doing my paper tube as well and finally I had been consistently making it by using 150 grams Kraft paper with 14 turns. Making it into 20mm inner diameter tube. Could you tell me what is your paper tube made off?

Do you ram your propellant? or your press it with hydraulic. what is your max. load (pressure)? What is your length of the tube by the way?

I hope you don't mind sharing it with me. Thank you very much

Wow, sasman very nice rockets. I like this one the best. http://www.gambler.p...d.made.tube.WMV Would you mind sharing the star comps you used for that? Those stars were beautiful for you first try. They all changed color and went out at the same time. Just beautiful IMHO. Also, could you explain how you made that paylod with 7 salutes in it?

it was core burner 5% titanium all i did was drill out the end plug with a 5mm hole no payload i just wanted to see how high it could fly before the pressure came through the top hole...I was surprised at the end result considering there was no payload..?NopayloadTest

Just noticed what you said above and watching the video reminded me of a problem i had doing what you did. I made a simple rocket as i normally would do and they fly great, but this time i drilled a 3mm hole in the end plug to pass fire to a small salute i had above it, but when the rocket ignited, all of the propellant seemed to burn at once and shoot out booth clay plugs with holes in, this ignited the small salute and luckily know one was around to be hurt. Does anyone know why this really annoying thing happens? I have solved the problem now due to Matt's advice which simply states ramming some propellant in the small hole you make in you clay plug.

I had a lot experience of the same problems, the pass fire were just can't perform to my expectation and very dangerous. Even I added a end cap clay with tiny hole for the fuse.

I solve the problem by not having the rocket ram but instead I press the BP with hydraulic with the help of steel sleeve to protect the hand made paper tube from over press. The process is slow but out of 55 rockets none of them give me any problem. There were no pass fire, I just used the fuse from the round shell and just glue the shell on to the rocket. To make sure that the shell is ignited, I added a small amount of BP granule in between.

Ramming rocket propellant is fast but unreliable.

I could disagree a little more. ;)

Less reliable on average, maybe, but unreliable isn't correct. A experienced rammer with decent powder, tools and specs can approach 100%, and have for centuries.

I'm sorry Sasman but I think you are a liar. I just cannot beleive you have only started making rockets ;)

Seriously though, your rockets and payloads are probally among the best I have seen from anyone on this site yet. They were my favourite at least.

I agree. I have made rockets were the tube is really squealing and wanting to break but just holds on. Once I have it mastered, it always takes off and doesn't CATO. I am using wood for a spindle which isn't really that decent
