Well I'm still here, just making sure that the society survives and submitting the formalities to companies house etc. If you'd like to give me a call David pm me and I'll send you my number, as I'd be more than happy to have somebody else alongside contributing any little bits we can.

#88175 Tube Compression / Shrinkage Due to Pressing

Posted by cooperman435 on 05 May 2017 - 10:26 PM

Has anyone ever tried a slightly convex base to the rammer?

My thought being it would encourage the loose powder to consolidate while not pushing outwards at the start, once solid it would then push outwards and consolidate against the wall of the tube too but not be pushed down after this point.

If the convex was too strong I imagine it would end up leaving an uncompacted layer around the outside (against the tube wall) which would undoubtably lead to failures though.

#87316 Unusual enquiry- how to induce controlled explosion.

Posted by cooperman435 on 11 June 2016 - 09:57 AM

While not fluent with gasified uses (strange really as I'm notorious for my money saving!) my understanding is they heat solid fuel to release flammable gasses used to then run an internal combustion engine?

If that's close enough then surely the problem your facing is dealt with by any flammable vapour producing liquid run veichle already? And I can't see a petrol veichle passing any tests with an "explosive pressure release vent" needed on the tank!

Diggers comments are a far better worded version of my opinion in that recreating a gas-air explosion has too many variances to be possible as a demonstration of safety

An explosive device also doesn't show an appropriate safety test either as its so far from real use

The bit I spotted though is the gasifier runs as slightly negative pressure? I assume things is due to the fuel delivery system scavenging generated gasses by sucking them out of the unit? Surely eliminating this and allowing neutral or even slightly elevated internal pressures completely removes the chance of air/oxygen entering the chamber and therefore cannot create an explosive mix?

Hi Luke, Id be more than happy to discuss the information your looking for by phone if you'd like to?

there are things to consider that maybe you haven't and things you cant do for definite. It does also depend somewhat on the exact use and scenario your using them in.

If you PM me I will pass on my number.

I don't know for a fact but I suspect a Mercury thermometer would be exempt, if anyone knows for sure please speak now or forever hold your peace!

#86903 Chemicals suppliers?

Hi Bartd, I couldn't speak for individual companies and if any of them have a delivery system in place to comply with the EPP requirements but I did do some work to try and establish getting one of the courier companies to offer the service through them and came up badly lacking as they were suggesting huge premiums for the service.

It's also a little complicated as we spoke to the home office and they pointed out that the seller would require your EPP licence and your photographic ID to sell the goods but then you would need them both to show the courier on delivery as they would be at that point classed as the suplier at the point of handing it over at your door so require photo ID.

The ideal situation is a company that delivers personally but I'm sorry I cannot suggest one from personal knowledge

You are correct James however when you consider a hybrid rockets short storage requirements it can alter slightly.

1 most gasses do yes indeed liquefy at pressure but this is often at higher pressures than are required to maintain that state

1 the tank is filled and then used straight away so never has to "hold" pressure or at least full pressure. It's essentially a liquid container able to hold only modest pressure to help slow down the boiling off of the liquid. This means you can store the same amount of liquid with a far thinner walled / lighter weight tank than if you had to hold it indefinitely at full pressure.

Just to be safe your aware that you'd require a cad certificate for the importation of these from China?

#85806 Gerb tubes

Pva will aid strength and I imagine a small help in flame/heat proofing but sodium sillicate watered down to allow it to soak into the tubes interior surface will do the most.

There was a thread a while back also discussing the back face of the nozzle helping greatly. Flat faced rears caused a swirl of burning gasses to erode the tube whereas angled or even curved rears funnelled them away from the wall towards the nozzle and stopped the issue

Back on topic but if you determine the dimensions you require Id be more than happy to quote you for building them (and finalise the designs) as I was a coded welder back in the days!

Well I have to say thank you for my name not being on that list but why is it that you have the opinion that Arthur and Wayne don't care?

Arthur is actively pushing the idea and practicality of organizing training to help people in your exact situation prove competency.

Wayne has spent literally THOUSANDS of hours and I dare say thousands of pounds of his own money ensuring that when the regs were updated we weren't banned from practical experimentation completely.

We obviously care, why would anyone suggest for a moment we don't? I ask for evidence of this please?

What is it you (or anyone else for that matter) thinks we should be doing?

I have already said on a previous thread that I hoped to offer a similar course in West Yorkshire this year, obviously distance is a factor for most people but if this goes ahead there will be places available and I hope to make it cheaper than £150 all going to plan.
