OK first things first
, using nitrocellulose lacquer is what makes the start go into the smoulder phase, this is what it allows it to build up a bubble of carbon dioxide to make the "bang", it will also make your crackles rock solid, the yellow smoke.... possibly got a high chlorine content from your parlon, DONT BREATH IT IN!!
its my only advice so far, but check out pyroguide.com for its micro star advice, use nitrocellulose lacquer next time!! its available on eBay or you can make your own

OK heres how you do it, we do a lot of gerbs at work, DONT change your mix, seems pretty nice how it is, for a longer duration but same effect add maybe 5/10% TALCUM powder...basically baby powder, the real chemical you want is magnese dioxide, but baby powder works just the same, this should give you a longer duration, and only make the height of your gerb a little lower, you can always add the talc but then make your choke size smaller if you are really determined on making the perfect gerb
another option is a greater particle size and less off it, will give you more of a flitter effect, hope this has helped
